Smoothies

Smoothies pack a punch of flavor and are as pure as the ingredients you choose to use. From my very first experience thirty years ago, I was sold on the freshness, sweetness, and shake-like, creamy texture of smoothies. And since then, I've made a point to keep smoothies as a staple in the house. My kids grew up on them and loved them; my nephews loved them when they came to Aunt CG's (that's me, by the way) home.

Here is the best news about smoothies: they are nearly impossible to mess up if you only add fruits you love to eat.

In addition, they are easy to make and I never use a recipe because you don't need one. Truth. Just know that after you make a few and experiment a little, you get a feel for flavors and textures and how much to use: fruits vs. liquid, e.g., orange juice, coconut milk, yogurt, et cetera.

To get you started, here is one of my basic recipes that is also one of my favorites. As for the amounts, they are estimates.

FRUIT SMOOTHIE

  • Orange juice, about 1/4 cup
  • Banana, 1, sliced and frozen (air-tight baggies work well to keep them from turning brown)
  • Peaches, 1/2 to 3/4 cup, frozen pieces


Put all ingredients into a mixer or food processor and blend until creamy. If it's too 'liquidy', add more frozen fruit. If it is too thick, add a tiny amount of juice. By the way, a little juice goes a long way in making it creamy, so use sparingly if you need to add more.

Remember you can experiment with all your favorite fruits. If you don't want to use banana, frozen mango pieces with plain/vanilla yogurt makes for a nice substitute. Coconut milk is also great with fruits. Tell me your favorites or if you'd like more smoothie ideas.
